TRAINING OF THE TRANSPORTERS ON DRUG ABUSE AS A CAUSATIVE AGENT OF ROAD ACCIDENT.
Drug abuse is the illicit, non-medical use of any substance intended for curative purposes. This includes alcohol and tobacco as well as natural and manufactured drugs. The major users of these drugs in Nigeria according to various researches are the youth particularly rampant among the commercial road users. Drugs can be harmful in a number of ways both through immediate effects and through damage to health overtime, In addition, the effects of marijuana on perception, reaction and coordination of movements can result in road accidents. It is a common knowledge that people that take drug or alcohol before or while driving are more liable to having accident than those that are clear header. Most drivers considers taking hard drug like cigarette, marijuana, cocaine, heroin etc, and alcohol as anesthetics, stimulants and toughen agents as energetic stimulants which provide them the required external forces and skills to undertake the rigorousity of the driving job. Road accidents claim more lives than any other form of diseases including HIV/AIDS. Thousands of innocent lives are being wasted on daily basis rendering many to become widow, fatherless, motherless and even raising more hopeless families.
Owing to the above, CIADEC has taken a pragmatic step with the intention of reducing incessant road accidents in the country by organizing an enlightenment campaign in collaboration with Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to train and re-orientate motor drivers under the auspices of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Oyo State chapter.
